Model 58 Ergonomic Grate Lifter                   Model 34 Ergonomic Grate Lifter

The Ergonomic Grate Lifters use lever & fulcrum principals for easy removal of slotted grates.  They can help prevent injuries and reduce manpower required for storm drain maintenance.  We offer a complete line of slotted grate and manhole cover lifters and pullers.  Custom models are available upon request.

Both ergonomic models can be combined with an optional tip allowing them to be used for slotted grates and manhole covers.  Use of the Combination Ergonomic Lifters depend upon the size of the slots in the grates and the diameter of the holes in the covers and will not necessarily work with all grates and covers.

The diagram above is for the Model 34.  It is usually preferred by taller people, weighs approximately 22 pounds and is made with 3/4" steel rod, then hot dip galvanized.  The diagram below is for the Model 58.  It has a lower profile and is usually preferred by shorter people.  It weighs approximately 18 pounds, is made with 5/8" steel rod, then hot dip galvanized.  Besides it's lighter weight and smaller size, the Model 58 can be used with narrower slots.

Basic Procedure for Removing Grates

First, always break the seal between the grate or cover and catch basin prior to using grate lifters.  Hit the corner with a sledge or heavy hammer.

Place lifter tee through center slot (or as close to the center of grate as possible) on one side of the grate.

Rotate the grate lifter so that it is lined up with the longitudinal centerline of the grate.

Position lifter tee so that distance X is greater than distance Y.   The center of gravity of the grate will be such that it rotates the grate in the direction of the arrows when lifted.  This will cause the grate to catch on the lifter diagonal member allowing the grate to be lifted.

Carefully pivot the grate lifter swinging the grate out of the way and placing it on the ground.  Note, taking care not to allow the grate to rotate on the tee head will allow you to place it back exactly into the catch basin frame.  This will become apparent with a little practice.
